Six checks before your first connection
General practice for any Windows machine you reach over Remote Desktop, taken from Microsoft's own documentation.
Pick a Remote Desktop client
Windows includes Remote Desktop Connection. Microsoft also publishes RDP clients for macOS, iOS and Android, and Linux clients such as Remmina speak the same protocol.
Know the port and keep it narrow
RDP listens on TCP port 3389 by default. Open to the whole internet it invites automated password guessing, so allow only the addresses you connect from where you can, and keep Network Level Authentication on.
Set a strong, unique password at once
Use a long password you have never used anywhere else. A remote desktop sign-in page is a common target for automated guessing.
Plan for how many people sign in
Windows Server allows two simultaneous administrative Remote Desktop sessions. A client edition of Windows allows one signed-in user at a time. More people need the Remote Desktop Session Host role and matching licences.
Keep it updated and copy out what matters
Leave Windows Update on, and keep your own copy of any file you could not recreate. A server is one machine, and copies belong somewhere else.
