Why WordPress Runs Faster on EGPHP

Standard hosts run Apache and MySQL on overloaded spinning disks. We isolate every site with dedicated Nginx worker processes and Redis.

< 20 ms The first byte of a page, from our server, measured on the server itself with encryption included.

The rest of the time is the distance between our servers in Germany and you. That part depends on where you are, so measure it from your own connection.

Measure it from your connection

Database queries are cached directly in memory via Redis, ensuring your product pages, dynamic carts, and checkout screens load without lag even during peak sales events.

The Road a Request Takes, and Where It Can Stop Early

A page can be answered at several stops on the way in. The earlier one of them can answer, the less work is left for everything behind it.

1 Browser Visitor 2 Nginx Web server Can end here 3 FastCGI cache Finished pages Can end here 4 PHP-FPM Runs WordPress 5 Redis Object cache Can end here 6 MySQL Database
A copper edge marks a stop that can answer on its own. The answer travels back the way the request came.
  1. Browser

Sends the request. Styles, scripts and images it already stores are reused instead of being downloaded again.

  2. Nginx

Meets every request first, over an encrypted connection, serves images, styles and scripts straight from disk and passes on only what needs PHP.

  3. FastCGI cache

Nginx can keep the finished page that PHP produced and hand it to the next visitor without running PHP again. A request that carries a login or a shopping cart is normally left out, because that page is personal.

  4. PHP-FPM

Runs WordPress. It keeps a pool of ready workers instead of starting a process for every request, and each site can have a pool of its own with its own settings. OPcache keeps the compiled PHP code in memory.

  5. Redis

WordPress remembers database answers only until the request ends, unless a persistent object cache is plugged in. Redis keeps them in memory between requests, so the same query is not asked twice.

  6. MySQL

The source of truth. It is asked only for what nothing above had, and it is where every change is written.

What Is Looked After, and How Often

Some of it runs on its own, some is done by our engineers on a maintenance plan, and a little is best kept in your own diary.

  1. Around the clock

    • Built inThe firewall filters brute-force logins, XML-RPC floods and known WordPress exploit attempts.
    • EngineersUptime, disk, memory, certificate expiry and backup completion are watched.
  2. Every day

    • Built inThe SSL certificate renews itself weeks ahead, and a daily check tells us if a renewal ever fails.
    • Built inOn the largest plan, files and database are backed up.
  3. Every two days

    • Built inFiles and database are backed up on every plan, and kept for up to a month depending on the plan.
  4. Before each update

    • YouTake a backup and check that it is usable. WordPress documents this as the step to do first.
    • YouTry core, plugin and theme updates on a staging copy, then push them to live.
    • Built inThe staging clone and the restore are one click each, so neither step is put off.
  5. On a schedule

    • EngineersOperating system and package updates are applied, tested on a staging copy first where the plan includes one.
    • EngineersRestores are tested and the result is sent in writing.
  6. Every month

    • YouRestore one backup onto a staging site, to prove that the copy you would rely on really works.
